Celebrate Active Aging Week: Inspiring Wellness, Connection, and Vitality

Join us for Active Aging Week 2018!

From October 6 to 12, we celebrate Active Aging Week, a worldwide initiative that encourages older adults to embrace a vibrant, active, and engaged lifestyle. At The Moorings at Lewes, we believe that an active senior lifestyle is the key to living longer, healthier, and happier lives. This week, we want to highlight the importance of staying physically, socially, and mentally active, and how our community and senior wellness program are designed to help you do just that.

The Pillars of Active Aging

Active aging is a holistic concept that goes beyond simply exercising. It’s about empowering older adults to take control of their well-being by focusing on three essential pillars:

  • Physical Activity: Keeping your body in motion is fundamental. Regular physical activity helps maintain mobility, strength, and balance, all of which are crucial for maintaining independence. It can also improve heart health, boost your mood, and increase energy levels.
    • Wellness Tips: Aim for a mix of activities, such as brisk walks along the Delaware beaches, yoga or aquatic classes in our fitness center, or a fun game of pickleball. The key is to find activities you enjoy so you’ll stick with them. The National Institute on Aging provides excellent resources on safe exercises for older adults.
  • Mental Engagement: A healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body. Engaging in mentally stimulating activities helps maintain memory and cognitive function.
    • Wellness Tips: Try learning a new skill, whether it’s a language, a musical instrument, or a creative art form. Our vibrant community offers opportunities to join book clubs, attend lectures, or engage in stimulating discussions with fellow residents.
  • Social Connection: Strong social bonds are a vital part of a long and happy life. Maintaining an active social life can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation and has a direct, positive impact on overall health.
    • Wellness Tips: Make an effort to connect with new people by attending our community events, joining a club, or simply sharing a meal with friends. We offer a wide range of social gatherings, from happy hours to cultural events, that make it easy to broaden your social circle.

Making Wellness a Habit:

Embracing active aging is about more than a single week of celebration; it’s about building a sustainable routine that makes you feel good. Here are some simple, actionable tips to help you get started:

  • Start small: Begin with short, daily walks and gradually increase your pace and distance.
  • Fuel your body: Incorporate healthy, nutrient-rich foods into your diet. For healthy eating tips, you can visit the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Prioritize sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. The Sleep Foundation has great resources on how to improve your sleep health as you age.

By making a conscious effort to stay active and engaged, you can not only celebrate Active Aging Week but also build a foundation for a healthier and more fulfilling life. At The Moorings at Lewes, we are committed to providing the environment, programs, and community to help you do just that.
