The Best Beaches in Delaware

Lifeguard chair in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Delaware might be the second smallest state in the country, but as part of the Atlantic coastal plain, its wide variety of stunning beaches keep visitors coming back summer after summer. Tourism in Delaware generates billions of dollars an annual basis, and “The First State” offers an array of attractions in addition to the coastline, like museums, parks and wildlife refuges, lighthouses and historic places. However, it’s the beaches that have the most draw, making Delaware a highly popular vacation destination for well over a hundred years.

Visit These Delaware Beaches this Summer

It’s no surprise that millions of Americans have fond memories of vacationing at the beautiful Delaware beaches in the summer. The Delaware coastline was explored by Europeans as far back as the 16th century, and today, it offers miles of sandy beaches for strolling along, relaxing, surfing the ocean waves, building sandcastles, watching glorious sunrises and more. If you’re looking for the ultimate beach vacation this summer, considering visiting these spectacular Delaware beaches, each featuring their own distinct personality:

Lewes Beach
Lewes is known as “The First Town in the First State,” and it’s long been a beloved vacation spot particularly for residents of the Washington D.C. area. Lewes Beach boasts miles of soft, golden sand, an uncrowded shoreline and gentle waves perfect for wading in on those hot summer days.

Bethany Beach
Every year, over 15,000 vacationers make their way to this popular beach in Delaware over the summer. Bethany Beach was a quiet, small community prior to 1950, but thanks to the construction of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, the area grew in popularity by leaps and bounds after the second World War due to its easy accessibility to residents in the nation’s capital. Although the town is still small with only around 1,000 full-time residents, the area offers an array of public amenities and attractions like restaurants, hotels, and vacation homes.

Rehoboth Beach
Tourists from all parts of the country converge on Rehoboth Beach, the self-proclaimed “Nation’s Summer Capital,” every summer. Lifeguards protect the mile-and-a-half shoreline throughout the season, and visitors enjoy a wide variety of events and activities along the boardwalk all summer long. Rehoboth Beach also offers miniature golf, arcades and an amusement park, and shoppers will enjoy perusing the many unique boutiques or browsing along the “mile of style,” an outlet mall filled with luxury brand names.

Dewey Beach
You wouldn’t know from the tiny population of Dewey Beach (around 300 residents) that it’s actually the most visited beach in Delaware. In fact, during peak season around 30,000 people descend upon Dewey Beach every year. Dewey beach has been a popular family vacation spot since 1981 and goes by the motto: “Dewey Beach: A Way of Life.” It’s also known for its exciting nightlife, dozens of local eateries, plus fun watersports like jet-skiing and parasailing.

Cape Henlopen State Park

Also located in Lewes, the beach at Cape Henlopen State Park is open year-round for swimming and fun, with lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day. There’s also a fishing pier and campground, and Cape Henlopen offers a variety of additional invigorating outdoor activities like hiking, biking, a golf course and so much more.
