Wellness in the Pandemic: The Importance of Staying Socially Active for Seniors

A happy senior couple takes a stroll on the beach.

Whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, it’s easy to feel happy and energized when socializing with the ones you love. When you’re socially active, you help to improve your overall wellbeing, leading to a healthy and satisfying lifestyle. When you live an active social life, you see benefits such as an improved mood, better physical health, a boosted immune system and a longer, healthier life. But it can be difficult to enjoy the company of others when you’re striving to stay healthy and socially distance yourself. Thankfully, there are some safe ways to stay socially active from a safe space.

Safe Ways to Stay Socially Active

While travel and many indoor experiences are temporarily off the itinerary due to the ongoing pandemic, there are still plenty of activities that you can do with those you love, even at a safe distance.

  • Connect with your loved ones through phone calls and video chats. Establishing communication with the ones you love is an important part of social wellness — whether you have a set schedule or just chat when they’re available. Phone calls and video conferencing help you fight off the feelings of isolation, loneliness and depression. Be sure to keep up with regular communication so you can stay connected with your loved ones.
  • Stream a virtual concert. They say that music feeds the soul, so why not enjoy some music virtually with a friend or family member? Because concerts were cancelled all over the world this past year, many famous artists decided to stream virtual concerts online. If you enjoy contemporary artists, YouTube offers a playlist of artists such as Lady Gaga, Elton John and John Legend performing live from their own homes. If you prefer classical music, there are many orchestra concerts available to stream for free as well.
  • Stream an online fitness class with others. Thanks to advancements in technology, there are now entire libraries of online fitness classes and workout videos that you can stream with family and friends. Stay fit and create new memories with your children and grandkids while getting your heart pumping. And the best part is you can do it any time and anywhere, making it easy to work around your loved ones’ schedules.
  • Bake or cook together. Baking and cooking are great ways to share a laugh in the kitchen and enjoy a new recipe together. Even with social distancing guidelines, the fun doesn’t have to stop. Simply share the recipe with your loved one and make it together over a video call. When it’s finished, you can share your experiences of how it turned out for each of you.

Experience True Social Wellness with The Moorings at Lewes

At The Moorings at Lewes, we believe that nothing is more important than the safety of those in our care, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s why we offer a variety of ways to stay safe yet engaged. Resident Carol Lader told us, “The staff did many things to keep us all engaged. They delivered ice cream, enabled pick-up for breakfast and lunch and delivered our dinners, helped secure grocery essentials, and hosted local entertainers, including ‘tutu Tuesdays’ where a group of folks from the Lewes community and their children, ALL decked out in tutus, would run slowly through the grounds. We knew what time it was happening, and we’d look out and wave to them. It gave us something to smile about.”
