Spiritual Wellness for Seniors

Get in Touch With Your Spirituality

Spirituality means many things to many different people, although it generally involves finding a connection to something bigger and deep investigation into one’s personal meaning in life. A spiritually well person is someone who finds a clear purpose in life and acts in accordance with that motive. Of course, this is a deeply personal matter, and improving one’s spiritual wellness is not a one-size-fits-all process.

At The Moorings at Lewes, we emphasize all seven dimensions of wellness; physical, intellectual, emotional, social, environmental, spiritual and vocational. Let’s take a closer look at ways to improve spiritual wellness.

5 Ways to Improve Spiritual Wellness

Spend a Few Minutes Every Day to Relax – Take some time for yourself! Even if for just a few minutes a day, give yourself some much deserved “me time.” Write in a journal. Just take a moment to sit and be alone. Connecting with yourself allows you to develop a better sense of who you truly are.

Explore Your Environment – A great way to work on spiritual wellness is by exploring the concept of environmental wellness. For some, there’s nothing more centering than connecting with the world around us. Residents Richard and Jean Whoolly frequently spend time outside and share that they, “love the outdoor walkways throughout the campus.” If you’d like to venture a little further, area attractions in Lewes include Cape Henlopen State Park and several dune-backed beaches.

Involve Yourself With Volunteering – There are ample opportunities to volunteer right in our community. Buy-the-Sea Gift Shop has 17 sale volunteers while The Library Committee is 12 strong. You’re also able to join the chorus, lead a volunteer committee, report wild animal and bird sightings and more. Although there are multiple ways to help others, the common thread between every opportunity is making yourself feel good while sharing your talents.

Immerse Yourself in Meditation or Prayer – If you believe in a higher being, pray. If you want to explore a form of non-religious spirituality, meditate. If you’re not sure how, we suggest you check out guided meditations provided by UCLE Health to begin with. Taking 10 minutes a day, or longer if you’d like, to meditate or pray will nurture your mind and create a stronger relationship with your spiritual wellness.

Examine Your Inner Values – Ask yourself questions about who you are and your meaning in life. What is my purpose? What do I value most? Am I using these values to influence my thoughts and decisions? When reflecting upon the values that are most important to us, we are enhancing our spiritual wellness greatly.
