Fall Activities for Seniors in Lewes, DE

A senior woman shops at a farmers market.

Sure, fall is all about pumpkins and corn mazes. But it’s also about taking advantage of the many fun fall activities for seniors. That’s easy to do in Lewes, Delaware, which boasts a charming downtown full of shops and restaurants, as well as some of the most beautiful beaches and natural areas on the coast.

Sip the Afternoon Away

With the heat of summer behind and the harvest underway, fall is the ideal time to sample the fruits of the field at Nassau Valley Vineyards. Try a wine tasting, then take the self-guided tour of the winery’s five galleries that “chronicles everything from the incredible 8,000-year history of wine to how the vineyard grows in the modern day.” Come on a weekend to enjoy live music and visit the farmers market.

Set Sail Under Sunny Skies

Have little ones coming for a visit? There’s no shortage of fun fall activities for seniors to do with their grandkids. One of the best is Pirates of Lewes Expeditions, which offers one-hour cruises of the historic Lewes canal, home to some of the first pirates in America. Get ready for your voyage by teaching your crew a bit of pirate lingo before you go.

Pick up Fall Produce and a Pumpkin

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market runs through Nov. 23 at Lewes Elementary School. Stop by to browse the handmade jams, jellies, and mustards; exotic mushrooms; fresh-cut flowers; pasture-raised meats; vegetables; smoked meats; herbs; fermented foods; seafood like crabs and oysters; and a variety of desserts. It’s one of the most delicious fall activities for seniors. Don’t forget to grab a pumpkin while you’re there.

Enjoy Beaches in the Off Season

Sure, beaches are typically enjoyed in a bathing suit, but there’s a whole different vibe when you’re strolling the sand snuggled in a cozy sweater with a cup of coffee in your hand. The shore is just as beautiful but way less crowded. Head to Cape Henlopen State Park to see for yourself. You can also borrow a bike for free, thanks to the Friends of Cape Henlopen, and bike the loop trail around the park.

Take a Scenic Drive

Some of the most stunning fall foliage in the state can be found along State Route 1, the Delaware Scenic Coastal Highway. With sand and surf to your east and lush fall foliage to the west, it’s a land-meets-sea experience. Stop along the way to explore the seaside towns of Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island.

Stroll Second Street

Second Street in downtown Lewes is home to a slew of specialty shops and restaurants, which makes it the perfect place for a stroll on a sunny fall afternoon. Get a jump on your holiday shopping at places like The Bungalow on 2nd and Lewes Gifts, then stop for a pumpkin pie or dutch apple cone at King’s Homemade Ice Cream Shop
